Sometimes I find that city life becomes a bit too tiring. I’m sick of fighting to walk down the street (if you frequent Oxford Street regularly, you’ll know) and I’m tired of the terrible noise and smoggy air. Occasionally when we all just need to take a break – there is nothing better than fresh air, tranquility and taking in all of nature’s beauty. Cornwall, one of England’s best getaway locations is a 6 hour journey from London – and boy is it worth it!
Just a 10 minute drive from Newquay station, is the stunning Fistral Beach Hotel and spa. The views driving up to this hotel were simply outstanding! Within 30 minutes of arriving, it was safe to say that Cornwall had well and truly captured a piece of my heart. It is well-known for it’s sandy beaches, rugged coastlines and crashing waves – not to mention an iconic location for surfing. Fistral Beach Hotel in located right on Fistral Beach with a perfect view of the sea-front. The perfect getaway for relaxation and stunning views – it is the perfect destination to get away from city life.
The hotel has a wonderful selection of 71 different rooms and suites, all catered for different budgets. We stayed in a Sea View Balcony Room which is in-between the Sea View Room and the Best Room. This stylish bedroom speaks for itself. Albeit on the smaller side, the room has a variety of amenities from a flat-screen TV, a superb private balcony with a stunning sea view, ESPA toiletries and a Hypnos bed. The best part of the room had to be the outstanding view and balcony – you could hear the waves crashing at night which was incredibly blissful. The bathroom was a particular highlight (and we all know how much I’m a sucker for a good bathroom) – it was almost as big as the bedroom itself with a stunning bathtub which overlooks the beach. If I could recommend one thing it would be: run a hot bath and fill it with ESPA toiletries, put your favourite film on laptop/tablet, and slide the window right open. Pure bliss!
The spa is another great asset to this hotel and is incredibly dreamy. I spent the first half an hour in the relaxation room before my treatments where I was able to completely unwind and take in my surroundings. I was then taken to have my treatments and they were amazing. I had the Fistral Spa signature treatment and it was absolutely bliss! The treatment consisted of an intense full body massage to ease away tension and relieve stress which was then followed by an ESPA facial to help restore the condition and appearance of the skin.
I would 100% recommend making the most of the rest of the spa facilities whilst at Fistral Beach or you’ll miss out completely! With a lovely sauna, jacuzzi and steam room – not to mention the amazing vitality suite with waterfull
Now onto the Dune Restaurant, a place I was excited to visit after hearing great reviews. The dining room is perched over the edge of the cliff and provides stunning views of the sea and the surfers riding crashing waves. Pre-dinner we had cocktails in the stunning Bay Bar, which were an absolute delight! The bartenders here know exactly what they are doing and most definitely do not hold back when it comes to measures! They were extremely accommodating as I asked specifically for a cocktail I had previously seen online, which they had sadly discontinued, but they were more than delighted to rise to the challenge and try to recreate it.
Upon looking at the menu, it was clear to see that there is a massive focus on seafood; due to the location on the coast and this was evident in every dish. The menu is changed seasonally as is the wine list – and what a list it was! Our starters were perfect given the location with a fresh Cornish Mackerel Fillet ‘on toast’ with onion bread and sweet tomato sauce and the Seared Scallops with onion bhaji, mango salsa and herb salad. On first impressions these were the perfect dishes, however the mackerel was incredibly salty and difficult to finish and the scallops were cold when they came out but in retrospect, the staff were incredibly attentive and gladly rectified any issues.
Moving onto the main courses, and these were delicious! The portions were perfectly-sized and cooked to perfection. The highlight of the evening had to be the Slow Braised Lamb with cous cous, tabbouleh, spiced potatoes and yoghurt. This was perfectly cooked – the lamb was moist and tender and the yoghurt perfectly balanced out the flavours. Another great dish was the Pan Fried Chicken Breast with wild mushroom and fondant potato. The chicken had an incredible taste and was well-seasoned, and cooked ever so perfectly.
All in all, this 4* hotel was truly an amazing experience and I would definitely recommend it for your next seaside stay!
